While drinking our morning coffee we watched the Florida Fish and Wildlife State Law Enforcement pull their boat out.
Along the Way
We decide to further explore Largo Sound today with The Mooch. Driving the Mooch is like plowing a brick through the water. It is not very aerodynamic. Fun, never the less. She has a .4 gallon tank, gets us around 10 miles, then needs a refill. We had a 1.5 tank day.
On our way back we ducked into one of the small side channels to see where it would lead.
North side of Largo Sound on the way back. We bicycled behind these houses a couple days ago.
Largo Sound Rock Castle is the oldest house in Key Largo. Built in 1920’s it survived the 1935 hurricane even though it flooded and supposedly now is haunted Current asking price is $1,550,000. (Not worth it. It’s a weird house and supposedly haunted) https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/55-Oceana-Ave-Key-Largo-FL-33037/306091450_zpid/?
Neither Dale or I have ever seen a boat like this before. Long oars and a sail.
Yikes! The Mooch eye view of the tour boat.
I’m going back someday, come what may, to Largo Sound.
Sound – A sound is a large sea or ocean inlet larger than a bay, deeper than a bight, wider than a fjord, or it may identify a narrow sea or ocean channel between two bodies of land.
The term sound is derived from the Anglo-Saxon or Old Norse word sund, which also means “swimming”. There is little consistency in the use of nautical “sound” in English-language.
I learned a new word today “Heliograph”. Fortunately I didn’t have to use it today and hopefully will never have to use it.
A heliograph is a semaphore system that signals by flashes of sunlight reflected by a mirror. The flashes are produced by momentarily pivoting the mirror, or by interrupting the beam with a shutter.
We always have a mirror and a whistle attached to the ditch bag we carry any time we’re on the Mooch incase we get into a predicament.
