Florida sunshine and warm weather has returned. Skinny, near naked ladies will be on the beaches today.

Along the Way

Welcome to Cocoa. We are almost to Cape Canaveral!

We turned starboard just after Florida State Road A1A Merritt Island bridge into the Canaveral Barge Canal. The Canaveral Barge Canal run between the Indian River on the west, through Merritt Island to the Banana River on the east.

We are staying at Port Canaveral Yacht Club until March 8. It’s 2 miles, 10 minute bike ride, from Plan B (our condo in Cape Canaveral).

There are three Disney cruise ships anchored just 3 miles outside Port Canaveral in the Atlantic. It costs $17,000 per day to have a ship at dock in the port. Disney brings the ships into port about one day a week to change crew and replenish supplies.

Argh! Another cold day. Day 3 of it. 47 degrees. Isinglass is still down in the upper helm and I’m still wearing socks. Today, I even put shoes on over my socks.

Small boat wind and wave advisories are still in effect.

Along the Way

Still Lake Worth, a bit further north in Riviera Beach.

Do you think I have Obsessive Comparative Disorder??????

I’m OK. I don’t have Obsessive Comparative Disorder because I used Google Maps instead of Zillow.

Jupiter Island, FL. Much better than Miami in my mind. The houses have land around them. Urban sprawl. Much more low keyed.

We’ve seen this boat before. Yesterday as a matter of fact. The Hudson was grounded out mid-channel at St Lucie. She’s waiting for a rising tide. yes dear… had the barnacles off her belly and her rudder polished as she plowed through the in-channel sand bar behind the Hudson.

We were attacked by about two dozen small sailboats just after clearing the bridge. A regatta was in full sail an using ICW channel markers for race markers. I was at the helm (missing a great photo op) when they attacked. Vessels under sail have right of way to vessels under power. yes dear… had to freeze in place and hoover until they cleared us. One of the safety patrol monitoring boats hailed us and told us to watch out for them as they raced 4 miles up to the next bridge and back. EeeYow!

It was a great day for sailing.

It was a rough night. A small craft advisory (sustained winds between 20 and 33 knots) held throughout the night. It’s still in the high 40s/low 50s.

This neighbor came in early morning. The plastic barrel mounted on top has a light in it and is his spot light/running lights.

Along the Way

Cruising speed today through the city is ‘no wake’, bout 5 knots for us.

There’s been too much wind today to run at idle speed. We needed to run a little higher speed than that to manage control the boat.

Ft Lauderdale

Bahia Mar Yacht Club, Ft Lauderdale – Not a single slips not small enough for yes dear…

‘Nadan’ was built by Burger in United States at their Manitowoc, Wisconsin shipyard , she was delivered to her owner in 2009 and last refitted in 2019.

Entering into West Palm Beach and Palm Beach

Some houses I didn’t even attempt to take a picture of because I didn’t have a panoramic lens.

The Fort Lauderdale area only began to develop after 1920s during the Florida land boom, made possible by the invention of air conditioning.

Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Venice of America” for its extensive system of waterways, including the New River, Intracoastal Waterway and a large number of canals.

There were 3 forts named “Fort Lauderdale” built by the United States during the Second Seminole War 1835 to 1842: the first was at the fork of the New River, the second was at Tarpon Bend on the New River between the present-day Colee Hammock and Rio Vista neighborhoods, and the third was near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina.

Fort Lauderdale is home to Port Everglades, one of the largest ship terminals in the world. It’s home to 10 major cruise lines, over 40 massive ships and one daily ferry operator. It is also one of the top 10 container ports in the US.

The high today was 59 degrees. I was forced to put socks on due to the cold. 🙁 This is the first time since Nov 2. It’s 92 days without socks.

The first action just before first light of the morning was a pump out. The full light wasn’t on but after being on the dock for 2 weeks we were certain we needed one. The marina had just fixed the pump out station. It’s a free pump out station. Free only goes so far….. A local entrepreneur with a pump out service boat has been sneaking into the marina once or twice a week after hours and emptying his load, breaking it every time uses it. He was told not to but since it was ‘free’ he still used it. He really got in trouble for breaking it this last time. The pump out station was down for 5 days.

WOW. We really understood why he kept coming back to to use this pump station (besides it being free). A couple of big gulps and yes dear… was almost sucked inside out. This pump out station has to go on the ‘Best of the Best’ list!!!

A cold front with rain and high winds was forecast for the day. Time to make make miles while the sun shines. We wanted to make Angel Fish Creek before the cold front hit.

Wind, waves and rain all came from different directions as we waited out the arrival of the cold front storm. Fortunately it only lasted for 20 minutes and we were off. Unfortunately the high winds persisted as we crossed from Card Sound into Biscayne Bay, then into Miami.

Gale for wind warnings were issued. The U.S. National Weather Service defines a gale as 34–47 knots of sustained surface winds.

The west and windward side of Biscayne Bay is quite shallow. This meant we had to travel in the middle of it to have enough water under the keel. This also meant that we’d be dealing with significant waves on the beam building over a 5 nautical mile fetch (i.e. the length of water over which a given wind has blown without obstruction).

The bay was snotty. Waves were choppy and confused. We tacked our way through the the Biscayne Bay challenged to figure out the best 45 degree angle to aim yes dear… at so we could optimally hit them. I’ll take torrential rain over waves on the beam any day of the week.

On more than one occasion in the course of the day I wondered what the heck we were doing out here. Occasionally wind would sweep the splash of a wave soundly into the upper helm.

We weren’t the only ones not enjoying the wind. There were multiple ‘pan pan’ issued for capsized boats, a sunken seaplane, a missing diver and persons in the water. (Pan pan is a nautical urgency message that someone is in trouble and needs assistance, but does not pose an immediate danger to anyone’s life or to the vessel itself.)

Miami is the only US city that was founded by a woman. A local businesswoman called Julia Tuttle encouraged a developer to extend the new Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami in 1896 – this led the way to the development of modern Miami.

Miami was once a mangrove swamp and the land we now know as Miami is mostly man made. As a result, some of the beaches need to be replenished with sand regularly.

Suntan lotion was invented in Miami. A pharmacist called Benjamin Green invented the mixture in 1944.

The first Burger King opened in Miami in 1954, and three years later, it introduced the iconic Whopper.
